From Waste to a Premium Product

Spent Grain Becomes Bread

The leftover malt from the brewing process, commonly known as spent grain, is given a new purpose instead of going to waste. Some of our spent grain is used to produce bread. In partnership with Steike Godt Bakery in Tromsø, it is transformed into premium bread that is served aboard Hurtigruten.

Everyone benefits – even the animals!

Every year, around 4 million kilograms of spent grain are given a second life as nutritious feed for local pigs, cattle, and sheep.

Local farmers collect spent grain from our brewery every week. Instead of going to waste, this nutrient-rich by-product is used as animal feed. It contains valuable proteins, fibre, and carbohydrates that are essential for livestock.

Our Magical Water

Water makes up more than 90% of beer and soft drinks, making it by far our most important raw material.

Our water source is unique in today’s brewing industry, located at the foot of the Lyngen Alps.

Pure, cold water of exceptional quality.

We draw only from a natural surplus. The river shown in the image flows directly from our water source, Storvannet, to the sea.

Natural Cooling

Every day, 100,000 litres of boiling wort are cooled from 100°C to 13°C.

A significant portion of this cooling is achieved using naturally cold water from our mountain water source.

The water is heated to approximately 63°C in the heat exchanger and is reused in the next brew. This results in substantial energy savings.

Energy

We use only electricity generated from renewable hydropower, which is abundant in our region.

For steam production, we use LNG (liquefied natural gas) supplied by Barents Naturgass in Hammerfest. We consume approximately 344 tonnes per year, equivalent to around 4,600 MWh of energy.

The natural gas is liquefied at –162°C, reducing its volume by approximately 600 times, enabling efficient transportation.
